Summary:
After their victory in First World War, the Allies announced the conditions of the armistice. Among other things, they specified that in addition to occupying the districts on the left bank of the Rhine, they would also hold three “bridgeheads” on the river’s right bank. In doing this, they failed to notice that a tiny piece of land shaped like a bottleneck was unassigned. Not even a footpath connected it to the rest of the German Reich. The inhabitants of the bottleneck had to smuggle food and coal under very dangerous circumstances. Gradually, they created their own state, staunchly refusing to give in to the French, who would have gladly appropriated their territory.
