Summary:
Sakura, 8 years old lives in Tokyo. She has not been able to overcome the grief from her mother’s death in on accident a few years earlier. Her French father has to go away on business and leaves Sakura in her grandmother’s care. But Sakura is thrown off by her grandmother’s very traditional Japanese lifestyle. Yet, little by little her time with her grandmother will transform Sakura, and she will understand more about her Japanese heritage. She will discover strength within herself that will help her overcome the drama of losing her mother and she will open her heart and mind to new to life. She will come to terms with things through the sights, sounds and adventures of new discoveries like fishing for shellfish, the flavor of dorayakis, the sensation of hot sand, the song of the reeds, the scents of the garden, the sea air, meeting villagers as well as the company of her grandmother’s cat.
This poetic and very moving graphic novel invites us to go back to basics to find authenticity. Through Sakura’s journey, the reader learns about Japanese and Asian culture.
