  • Summary:

May 2, 1945, Berlin, the capital of the Third Reich, falls to Soviet troops after three weeks of heavy fighting. Stalin didn’t believe the news and ordered his best spies to find him dead or alive.

Beria’s NKVD (the forerunner to the KGB) is searching on one side and Abakumov’s Smersh (a military counterintelligence unit) on the other.

On May 4th, two partially charred bodies were exhumed by the Smersh near the emergency exit of Hitler’s bunker.

July 1945: During the Potsdam conference, Stalin tells Churchill and Truman that Hitler and Eva Braun are alive.

He says that they have certainly fled to Argentina or Japan. The allies start to doubt his death. The myth that Hitler is still alive begins.
